SEPARATION
If you have decided to separate, then you will find yourself at a crossroad. Navigating which direction to take can be difficult and heart breaking. Separation is sad, it can make you anxious, depressed and stuck in the moment.
Often at this stage people like to ‘give advice’, they think you should try this and do that. At the end of the day it is about what you need and while advice is often given to try and help you, it can be confusing and cause more anxiety. There is no ‘one solution’ to separation. What works for some, may not work for others.
YOUR WORRIES
Emotional support, legal issues, finances – there are many issues to think about. The most important consideration is ‘what will happen to my child?’
In most cases a child has a right to spend time with both parents. How that will work is up to both parents based on the best interests of the child. This may involve discussions about custody arrangements, schedules on how they will go home to home and spend time with each parent, and extended families, and child support.
CHILD SUPPORT
The child support agency is set up to help parents with child support. Fact, it is not an easy process to navigate. Often one parent will hide their income, they might think they are rorting the system, but they are only hurting their child. They might think, ‘why should I pay my ex-partner?’ They are in fact paying to provide for their child.
PRACTICAL ARRANGEMENTS
How do we decide on living arrangements, financial responsibilities, and other practical matters that need to be addressed during separation? Remember every situation is unique. It is important to make decisions that are sustainable and in the best interests of your child.
Mediation is a good way for you to have control over these decisions. If you would like to speak to me about mediation, then please click the link below.
